Aloha and welcome to hawaii.surf! We’re launching April 20, 2025, with a simple goal: to celebrate the rich history of surfing in Hawaii and give back to the communities that keep its spirit alive. As surfers ourselves, we’re inspired by the waves and the stories they carry—from ancient heʻe nalu to the legends who rode them. This site is our way of honoring that legacy and building something meaningful for the future.

Our Mission

At hawaii.surf, we’re diving into the heart of Hawaiian surfing history. It’s a story that starts over a thousand years ago with Polynesians shaping koa boards, weaving chants to call the waves, and riding swells as an art of skill and spirit. It’s the tale of chiefs proving their mana on towering olo boards, families gathering on beaches to share the stoke, and watermen like Duke Kahanamoku carrying heʻe nalu to the world. We’re here to unearth these moments—piece by piece—and keep them alive for anyone who loves the ocean’s pull.

But this isn’t just about the past. Our mission is to support the present and future of Hawaii’s surf ohana and the global surf community. As we grow, we’ll launch merchandise—history-inspired books, prints, apparel, and maybe some surf gear—all rooted in the legacy of these islands. Every sale will fuel efforts that matter: teaching keiki to surf, cleaning up our beaches, protecting surf breaks from overdevelopment, and preserving the oral histories and artifacts of heʻe nalu. Surfing’s roots run deep in Hawaii; we want to ensure they thrive for generations to come.

What We’re Building

When we hit the waves on 4/20, hawaii.surf will launch with stories that trace surfing’s journey—from its Polynesian dawn to its cultural echoes in Hawaii today. No products yet (that’s coming post-launch), but plenty of passion. You’ll find blog posts unpacking the details: how ancient craftsmen turned wood into wave-riding art, how Duke spread the gospel of surfing, how heʻe nalu shaped Hawaiian identity. Over time, we’ll add more—community spotlights, deeper dives into the archives, and that merch store to turn our love into action.

This is about more than a website—it’s about giving back. Surfing’s given Hawaii so much: a sense of place, a shared joy, a connection to the sea. We’re channeling that into support for local programs—think surf lessons for kids in underserved areas, efforts to keep our oceans clean, or projects that save the tales of old watermen from fading. It’s a slow paddle, but one worth taking.

Why It Matters

Hawaii is surfing’s birthplace, its heart, its history. From petroglyphs of wave-riders carved in lava to the modern lineups buzzing with life, heʻe nalu is a thread that ties this place together. We’re not here to cash in on that—we’re here to lift it up. No names or faces, just a group of wave-lovers who see this as a chance to contribute. The ocean doesn’t care who we are, and neither should you—what matters is the mission.
